   Lou Dobbs is an idiot. CNN should fire him over this report. The report documents ongoing and apparently real plans to build a road, improve rail infrastructure, and possibly establish a new port in Kansas City to handle surface transportation. I’ll assume all that is true.

   But, the title at the bottom of the screen continually says “NAFTA Superhighway: Threat to Our Sovereignty.” How does Lou Dobbs (and the other true believers) bridge the huge gap from better infrastructure to a threat to sovereignty? Are Mexican troops going to be stationed in the U.S. when the road is done? Is Canada Post going to be delivering our mail? What we are seeing is nothing more than an ongoing effort improve surface transport from Mexico to the U.S. and Canada.

   Yes, most of this is driven by imports. Why? Because American consumers and businesses buy stuff from Mexico and things imported through Mexico. Lou Dobbs does not seem to care that the road goes in both directions, permitting the flow of goods and people from the U.S. to Mexico so Mexicans cab buy our stuff.

   If this is a threat to sovereignty, then so is the expansion of O’Hare Airport, the building of a new bridge between Windser and Detroit, and probably dozens of other infrastructure programs going on throughout the country.

   And, if you say that this is just part of a larger picture involving the secretive Security and Prosperity Partnership, you are barking up the wrong tree. Responsible neighboring governments have to talk to each other all the time. Governments are usually in the business of facilitating legitimate trade. There is nothing going on here.

   But, you may say, what about the Council on Foreign Relations? What about it? A groups of policy wonks at a think tank have pitched the idea of creating a North American Union complete with a common currency and administrative integration. So what? Wake me up when they close the U.S. Mint.
